How Rice And Sand Reacts To Sound

This video is quite amazing. It demonstrates how rice and sand (or any small particles) react to sound.
The rice is spread on a metal plate then sound is used to resonate the metal plate and it makes the rice form patterns on the plate.

If anyone knows of a site that details how and why this happens, or why the rice forms the shapes it does I would love to know about it.

Its simple to do this expriment. It is basically a piezo ceramic glued to a metal plate. A programmable function generator is connected to an amp, and from there it is connected to the piexo ceramic. This makes the metal vibrates and at each harmonic resonance of the metal plate the metal will deform and vibration peeks and valleys occurs at particular places on the plate. This causes the rice to move away from the peeks and valleys to saddle points (no vibration areas). (= Yes, us Americans are stupid...
